Brief Description The module is concerned with the key components of mental health care in the community and will focus on knowledge, skills and competencies required in day to day mental health work. In particular this module is provided in recognition of the diversity of the mental health workforce and the culture of involving service users and carers in influencing and improving mental health services. This module is mapped to the National Occupational Standards.
Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

  • a variety of interventions and approaches in mental health care in a culturally diverse population;
  • the developing culture of the inclusion of service users and carers in developing and improving services;
  • the independent and interrelating influence of gender, age, race, culture, beliefs, sexual orientation, social class and ability
  • current mental health law, including impending amendments to the legislation and the implications of the inclusion of service users and carers;
  • National Service Frameworks for mental health and how these affect the application of legislation, national and local polices;
  • the Care Programme Approach;
  • the roles and responsibilities of different professions and workers within mental health work;
  • methods of promoting rights;
  • risk assessment and management in the context of an inclusive and culturally sensitive approach to mental health work.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Recognise that people with mental health problems may have common and differing needs and wants that are influenced by social group and familial membership;
b) Identify differing theories/models that explain the nature and causes of mental health problems;
c) Compare the main interventions and approaches in mental health work undertaken by different workers;
d) Analyse the legal and policy frameworks for mental health care;
e) Defend best practice approaches to mental health work including service user involvement and the contribution of carers of people with mental health problems;
f) Illustrate how to work within an effective care planning process and effectively contribute to care planning, risk assessment and management.




ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Communicate with service users and carers in way that promotes rights and choice in the context of law;
b) Construct arguments to support the rights of people with mental health problems;
c) Communicate in writing in accordance with agency policy and law;
d) Reflect on practice.
