Brief Description

The module aims to provide students with an overview of the key global issues confronting the media and music industry. It explores how globalisation is speeding up technological changes which impact on the media world and looks at current and likely future developments. The changing face of the competitive media environment, large company versus independent organisations and conflict resolution will be considered. Specific issues most appropriate to the industry at the time students register for the course will be identified, but will include both industry-wide issues (such as legal and regulatory issues, ethics and corporate social responsibility, the future of the industries and practical issues that will be relevant to students seeking to make a career in the industry (for example, pitching skills and the role of entrepreneurial businesses within the industry).

Indicative Syllabus

Industry-wide issues including globalisation (definition and implications), harnessing and monetizing new digital technologies, legal and regulatory issues and framework, ethical issues and corporate social responsibility, cross-cultural issues, emerging business models for new artists, the future of retail and distribution and the future of public service broadcasting, effective brand management in a global society. This course will also consider practical areas and issues that relate to establishing a career in the industry such as the pitching process, career evaluation and development skills (critical industry needs, internal capabilities and personal vision), establishing an entrepreneurial business in the industry (including business planning skills).

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to……

 

1. Analyse the key issues in the media and music industry today, assessing current industry opportunities and threats and the impact of likely future developments.

2. Debate various issues that surround music and media and understand the implications of social corporate responsibility in the context of the communities around music and media enterprises and in relation to the wider world.?

3. Explore marketing and branding issues that arise through operating in the global marketplace.?

4. Find appropriate information for self-directed research and be able to assess the extent to which this information is appropriate, robust and complete

5. Demonstrate effective communication and team working skills: individual and group presentation skills

6. Apply personal career diagnostic: development and application of personal career aspirations in the light of key current global issues
