Brief Description

The module takes those skills in journalism developed at Level 5 and uses them as the basis for a full examination of the construction and delivery of live radio and television news bulletins, a newspaper and website. Working in shifts as members of news teams allocated with specific duties students will

generate reactive and proactive material in the areas of radio, television, print and on-line throughout a week to demonstrate their professional abilities in all aspects of practical news production involving researching, writing, reporting, presentation, editing and management.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will be production workshop based with students working in shifts to gather material for broadcast news bulletins, publications and website for an agreed target audience. Students will be expected to demonstrate professional standards in writing, reporting, editing and presentation skills. Designated a specific role a student will be expected to demonstrate an awareness of the importance of team-working and individual contributions make to the provision of news outlets and in the workplace. High levels of preparation, organization, decision-making, editorial choices and news values will be required to achieve successful outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1.      Have an advanced ability to construct consecutive news material in the areas of radio, TV, print and online journalism

2.      Have an advanced understanding of the generic similarities and specific differences within each mode of delivery

3.      Have an advanced ability to deal with the pressures of professional practice in a working newsroom

4.      Work as a team member to produce news output

5.      Submit material that legally and ethically correct

Present and deliver news bulletin material to set broadcast times and publication deadlines to a specific audience
