Brief Description

This module will explore ethical dilemmas and the rules and regulations that affect the way journalists and media producers communicate with audiences. From self-censorship to industry codes of practice, students will gain a greater awareness of the rights and responsibilities underpinning media production. 

Indicative Syllabus

Ethical dilemmas for different types of media industries; regulations under codes of conduct across broadcasting, newspapers, online and other media platforms; principles of self-censorship and other constraints that affect the media in general.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand seminal concepts that underpin media ethics’ debates and can relate these to issues across a range of media platforms
  2. Understand specific concepts and regulatory frameworks that affect particular media genres, particularly journalism
  3. Analyse the principles behind self-censorship and why it is an issue for audiences as well as journalists and media producers
  4. Demonstrate a good understanding of Compliance used by commissioning editors in the media industries
  5. Critically analyse how ethics, regulation and censorship have affected the way the media portrays society to audiences
  6. Identify sources for research and establish a strategy for research using
