Brief Description

This module enables cross course collaboration. Students will gain the ability to use After Effects software learning a range of Special FX they can then integrate into their personal media practice.The module will also cover the process of shooting ‘greenscreen’ footage to be effected on to.

Indicative Syllabus

VFX on After Effects including Rotoscoping, Keying, ‘Art of the Matte’, Color Manipulation, Animation Skills, Tracking and Retouching will be undertaken in the module alongside analytical study of current use of Visual Effects in contemporary Media. Students will be encouraged to develop creative ideas through set briefs in which they generate pieces of work, which illustrate the use of a number of the above effects. Working in small groups, they will then produce two short pieces that could be included on showreels or integrated into larger projects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the students should be able to demonstrate that they:

1. Understand the relationship between filmed and generated images.

2. Understand and appreciate the interaction between the Cinematographer, Editor and VFX generator to produce the final product.

3. Can work confidently with After Effects software – namely all of the techniques listed above.

4. Have the ability to shoot material to be ‘effected’ ie. Greenscreen lighting

5. Can demonstrate creative thinking, ideas generation and visual problem solving.

6. Can research and demonstrate communication and teamwork skills.
