Brief Description

This module will build on the understanding of the principles of writing for the screen developed in Scriptwriting I. A treatment for an adapted screenplay will be produced followed by a portfolio presentation.

Indicative Syllabus

This module is intended to further develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the theory and practice of screenwriting. Different aspects of writing for the screen will be considered with an introduction to the commercial considerations of the craft. It will be taught using a combination of talks, workshop exercises and the discussions of existing screenplays and screenworks. The module will begin with an overview of the processes of literary adaptation. Students will choose an original source from a selection provided by the module tutor and will adapt it into a script. In its production, existing skills in narrative, character and visual storytelling will be consolidated. By the end of the module students will have broadened their appreciation of aspects of writing for the screen and have begun to consider commercial imperatives.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module students should be able to:

1. Evidence a developing awareness of principles of adaptation for the screen

2. Originate and develop screenplay documents

3. Apply industry standard forms and processes with respect to scriptwriting

4. Have a developed sense of how to write for screen

5. Present screenplay concepts clearly
