Brief Description

In this module, working in small groups and using the skills and knowledge acquired in  TVP102/MD4802. You will research, develop, script and produce a 10’ TV programme which looks back on a past event (egs; WW2 memories from people who lived through it, a presenter led tour of a historical site). This will include interviews, archive footage and reconstructions. The module will therefore examine the specific methods of research , scripting and production used in documentary making , in this instance within the history genre

Indicative Syllabus

In semester one, students will learn how to research and develop a documentary idea to pitch and then how to write a history documentary script which includes a reconstruction script.

In semester two, they will then produce a history documentary.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Understand and critically evaluate how their own production process has assembled and represented the past
  2. Show some understanding of how they, as programme makers can best use reconstruction to bring the past to life
  3. Show a development in scriptwriting
  4. Show a development and understanding of single camera production
  5. Demonstrate competent research skills using primary and secondary sources
  6. Demonstrate developing scriptwriting skills
  7. Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively and sympathetically with contributors especially if their stories are personal
  8. Demonstrate sound interviewing techniques (including the correct wording of questions, not overlapping in sound)
