Brief Description

The module will develop students' conceptual understanding of television as a socially, politically and culturally embedded medium. A range of fiction and non-fiction programmes will be used to develop the critical analysis of TV texts, and to explore issues such as flow, scheduling, quality and aesthetics, branding, global television and convergence.

Indicative Syllabus

By drawing on television programmes through which to explore cultural and theoretical issues in more depth the module will help students to understand their own practices of production and consumption. Students will develop their understanding of audiences by engaging in their own audience response research. The module will also look at important developments in technology that is producing convergence, and will look at television as a global medium. The module will therefore offer students the opportunity to understand the complexity of the television industry within a local and global context. And to understand their own production and consumption practices.
