Brief Description

This module builds upon the skills and knowledge gained in level I, to help students develop a greater theoretical understanding of production principles. Different theoretical frameworks will be examined and then used in response to a practical assignment.

Indicative Syllabus

This module provides students with a greater theoretical understanding of directing, lighting, cinematography, soundtrack design and editing, in order that it can better inform their practice. Theoretical approaches will cover all aspects of the production process with students presenting their findings via both written and practical work. For the practical element students will form groups of subject specialists, i.e. cinematographers, sound designers, editors, etc. in order that they can collaborate and share ideas within their own chosen specialism.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate various theoretical approaches to the practical elements of the production process
  2. Theoretically understand the roles directing, lighting, cinematography, soundtrack and editing play in narrative and documentary forms
  3. Manipulate the aesthetic and expressive properties of their chosen specialism to achieve intended effects
  4. Demonstrate expertise in the technical practices relating to their chosen specialism
  5. Demonstrate technical proficiency in their chosen specialism
