Brief Description

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of the role and function of film festivals and of their social, industrial, economic and cultural contexts.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will consider film festivals at the local, national, and international level. Using case studies, a range of festivals will be considered in order to highlight the variety of business models, programming strategies, and communities served, be they urban or rural. The role of the festival in the film industry will be evaluated and their growing importance as sales arenas and market places will also be examined. The importance of online festivals as distribution and exhibition spaces will be explored. The module will also cover the skills required of work in the film festivals industry (including programming, marketing, fundraising, corporate sponsorship, and legal and operational requirements).

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Understand the role and function of film festivals

2. Investigate the structures within which film festivals operate and analyse examples

3. Appreciate the key skills and competencies of festival organisation, particularly the programming and delivery of a festival event

4. Develop and present the key components of a festival plan

5. Select and critique theoretical and industry material in an informed manner

6. Demonstrate independent research abilities

7. Communicate ideas clearly

8. Demonstrate good team skills when working in a group
