Brief Description

This module develops further an understanding of the skills required to conduct effective interviews for radio output on location and in the studio introduced at Level 4. You will develop a critical understanding of the role of interviewing, in the context of radio production and journalism by examining the content and placing of interview material in radio programmes.

Indicative Syllabus

This module is taught in seminars and through practical interviewing exercises in the production room, radio studios and on location. You will explore how to structure and ask appropriate questions to obtain information, opinion and explanation in a range of live and recorded interview situations. You will examine the role and purpose of the interviewer in a variety of scenarios and the relationship between the interviewer, interviewee and the listener. You will develop an understanding of the ethical dilemmas and legal restrictions faced by interviewers on radio and how editing and editorial decision-making processes affect broadcast outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1) Research, prepare, arrange, and conduct a live radio interview with an appropriate interviewee, within relevant legal and ethical constraints

2) Evidence an understanding of how organisations and individuals can attempt to influence the outcome of interviews

3) Evidence an understanding of factors and methodologies that influence the gathering, editing and dissemination of live interview material on radio

4) Evidence a sophisticated understanding the role of the interviewer, the challenges faced in a range of interview situations, and an awareness of the strategies required in order to achieve a satisfactory interview live on radio.
