Brief Description

This module will develop your understanding of radio genres and cultures. It will build a theoretical context for exploring how audiences use radio and will examine the role of radio genres in wider cultural and sub-cultural formations.

Indicative Syllabus

Radio is intricately and variously bound into our patterns of daily life. Our personal listening history tells us something about who we are, our culture and our taste. Radio is delivered in various formats and structures within a range of genres and formulae. This module will examine radio genres and cultures through a variety of case studies and examples. Within historical and social contexts the module will explore how radio draws on and is influenced by a country’s culture and how radio helps shape and contributes to that culture. The module will feature lectures, seminars, listening workshops, discussions and study group research.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1) Demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways in which radio and its genres are culturally situated

2) Locate and evaluate the function of radio in local, national and global contexts

3) Understand how radio genres act ideologically in informing cultural identities

4) Demonstrate Research and listening skills
