Brief Description

This module aims to equip students for working as a music composer and/or producer in a media and film environment. Students will apply their skills and knowledge in the creation of original compositions and sound design within a given media.

Indicative Syllabus

Students compose and produce sound design for a primarily visual medium (e.g. multi-media, internet, CD ROM, TV Programme, film, DVD menu etc.) Particular emphasis will be placed on correct formatting of the pieces, and students will need to research and correctly apply composition, instrumentation and production procedures and mastering techniques for the different requirements of the media forms. The theory component of this module will examine the work of significant composers and sound designers with reference to how their scoring techniques contribute to the narrative context of film and media and how the spectator/auditor emotionally responds to them

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to.

  1. Show a clear understanding of the different nature of the various media forms, including film and apply sound and music designs used within the same.
  2. Demonstrate a critical and reflective understanding of the technical restrictions involved in producing music for media and plan how to work around them
  3. Effectively compose and produce music or sound within technical and aesthetic restrictions
  4. Reflect on their ability to produce music that is emotively effective and affective within a media and film context
  5. Understand the textual functions of music and sound within a film and the role of soundtrack designers
  6. Demonstrate an ability to implement clear audio and musical solutions to the briefs
