Brief Description

This module seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage both those involved in the creative process and the process itself. The module therefore uses both traditional classroom based activities, as well as input from those actual engaged in creative endeavours. The module develops an understanding of the commonalties and distinctions between the creative challenges and process involved in a range of 'entertainment industry' contexts. It then enables a more detailed consideration of the management tasks, roles and responsibilities needed to facilitate the successful delivery of a specific creative task.

Indicative Syllabus

To facilitate the complex and highly situation-specific task of managing the creative process, this module considers a broad range of issues drawn from a range of areas of study. These include for example issues such as: the psychology of creativity and emotional intelligence, the nature of creative work, the managerial techniques applied to creative work and effective project management techniques in creative industries. The module also uses input from guest speakers and those engaged in a range of creative activities to ensure currency of the content.

Students develop:

  • an awareness of the creative challenges involved within a range of 'entertainment industry' projects;
  • an understanding of co-production;
  • the skills to oversee those engaged in the creative industries — both in terms of the process and as a managerial role;
  • an appreciation of the management tools and techniques, from a range of disciplines, that can be applied to deliver creative projects
  • the ability to analyse the specific challenges in relation to a real creative project and formulate a plan to implement the project.
  • recognise the tension between managing the creative process and meeting end user (consumer) needs.
