Brief Description

The module will examine celebrity journalism and consider what part the media plays in encouraging people to consume fame. Students will analyse how celebrity/entertainment news challenges conventional news values and will explore the relationship between the media and publicists.

Indicative Syllabus

The theory and practice of celebrity journalism across multimedia platforms; issues of identity, social comparison and consumption in audiences; perceptions of symbiosis between the media and celebrity publicists; mediated celebrity status and its impact on cultural norms; control and constraints in celebrity journalism; media ethics and privacy regulation.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of discourse in celebrity culture and journalism
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the perceived symbiosis between the media and celebrities and/or their publicists
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of audience consumption in relation to celebrity journalism
  4. Demonstrate a critical awareness of media ethics in relation to privacy and regulation
  5. Apply theoretical concepts to a range of issues that underpin celebrity journalism
  6. Identify sources for research and be able to apply these in a relevant way to celebrity journalism discourse
