Brief Description | This module will equip students with the skills needed to research, write, design and produce magazines for both print and online markets. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will equip students with the skills needed to produce original magazines. It will focus on writing and design skills for the different markets, as well as how to research and launch a new publication. Students will be required to carry out market research and to produce dummy issues of their publication. Lectures and workshops will allow students to concentrate on feature writing and design skills, with particular emphasis on the national magazine market. There will also be sessions on advanced sub-editing skills, including headline writing and picture editing and manipulation. Students will be trained in the use of InDesign and Photoshop. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Creatively explore and critique a wide range of writing and design styles 2. Demonstrate analytical approach to different types of magazines and markets 3. Research and write original features for the magazine market 4. Produce a range of features and pages that adhere to standards for appropriate markets and to strict deadlines 5. Produce a range of news stories that are compliant, legally and ethically correct, for appropriate markets and to strict deadlines. 6. Demonstrate presentation skills in order to pitch a journalistic concept |
