Brief Description

This module offers an opportunity to utilise and develop the practical journalism skills learnt at Level 4, together with the theory that underpins the practice. Students will work towards four news days.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will be workshop based with students assigning themselves roles within each news day and taking a full role in the preparation for the day. Tutors will provide clear guidance as to the outcome of the news days but students will assume responsibility for achieving those goals. Students will be encouraged to develop their critical and evaluative skills in the production of their own and colleagues’ broadcast, print and online work.

Each news day will reflect a specific medium: radio, television, newspaper and online. Working in shifts as members of news teams allocated with specific duties, students will, subject to negotiation with the tutor, generate reactive and proactive news items to demonstrate their professional abilities in all aspects of practical news production involving researching, writing, reporting, presentation, editing and management.
