Brief Description

This module will equip students with the practical skills needed to become multi-skilled sports journalists.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will learn how to summarise action in match reports; how to prepare for and conduct simple match commentaries; and how to write sports news stories. Students will be taught in seminars – starting with instruction of a particular aspect of sports reporting – leading onto practical activities.  Students are expected to rehearse these skills outside of scheduled lecture times and they should follow sports news closely on a wide range of news sources.  An interest in sport is essential together with a rudimentary understanding of the organisation and rules of the most popular sports. They will be required to set up coverage of live sports events to put their learning into practice and to produce a portfolio of their work.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.     Initiate, research, write and present a range of topical sports stories and reports that are accurate and engaging for appropriate audiences.

2.     Produce work that is compliant; legally and ethically correct; and produced within strict deadlines.

3.     Understand the logistics of sports reporting in theoretical and practical terms and the importance of thorough research and preparation before undertaking match coverage.

4.     Develop an informed and critical stance towards their own work and be able to critically evaluate coverage in the different media markets.
