Brief Description

This module will focus on the changing relationship between the media and society

Indicative Syllabus

This module will be delivered in lectures and workshops and students will develop a sound understanding of the history and economics of journalism and the rise of the influence of Public Relations in the sphere of the mass media. There will also be debates and discussions on subjects such as the democratisation of the media since the development of Web 2.0, scaremongering within the mass media, tabloidization of the media and the influence of the media on society.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.   Demonstrate an extensive understanding of the relationship between the media and society.

2.   Demonstrate a sound understanding of how to structure a theoretically informed argument and to illustrate this with effective textual examples.

3.   Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between PR and journalists

4.   Demonstrate a developed awareness of the cultural and professional contexts of history and the economics of journalism and to communicate this in an informed and coherent analysis. 

5.   Use key theoretical tools and methodologies to engage their independent research into the media

6.   Critically analyse independent research data
