Brief Description

This module introduces students to basic web design. It will look at online design in relation to other media, its history and the varying methods of site development. The module concentrates on basic HTML coding and creation of page content. Principles of graphic design such as layout, typography, use of colour, and visual hierarchy are introduced, in order to ensure the production of a simple, useable application. Students will work in small groups on construction of a prototype site and provide a considered evaluation of their finished piece.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will begin to produce HTML coding using web design software, carry out image manipulation and optimisation with Photoshop, and study and apply design principles. The process of designing for print and designing for online use is compared during the module. They will produce a small prototype site using this knowledge, work closely with the larger group and support the design decisions that have been made in their finished prototype.
