Brief Description

This module will introduce students to the range of roles, functions and processes within a television production team which holds across not only the full industry spectrum from independent production companies such as Endemol and RDF through to the producer /broadcasters – The BBC and ITV, but also the full range of genres from drama to entertainment. From an understanding of the process of production from development of the original idea to screen (transmission) and the concomitant stages and roles, the module will equip students with a foundational working "map" of a television production and the associated processes and personnel that will feed in to later modules.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will explore the roles of various production personnel from runner to executive producer in the bringing of a television production to the small screen. It will allow students to have a sound knowledge of the production process, including funding and budgeting, and from that will offer an insight in to the television industry as a whole and the relationship of that industry with its audience.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Describe the key processes and personnel of a major production team.
  2. Describe how these roles affect the outcome of a production.
  3. Examine the ways the production process can shape and change the original idea.
  4. Undertake a well structured case study using basic skills of primary and secondary research.
  5. Demonstrate provisional skills of primary research in to the workings and functions of production teams and companies explored on the module.
  6. Demonstrate library skills and an ability to use online resources through WebCT
  7. Demonstrate skills of group working
  8. Demonstrate an emerging ability to analyse the production process through case studies.
