Brief Description

This module encourages in-depth analysis and exploration of the practice of art direction within the Digital Film Production process. Students will formulate ideas, based upon a programme of film screenings, for the art direction of a scene, using skills gained during MD4701 and MD4702.

Indicative Syllabus

Based upon a programme of film screenings, both full length and excerpts, students will explore the concept of art direction with regard to Digital Film Production. Drawing upon their findings they will work in groups to design, and ultimately film, a scene in which all the elements are considered in relation to a given brief.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an aesthetic sensibility in the art direction of a scene
  2. Articulate the role of the art director within the production process and their relationship with the director, cinematographer, editor, etc.
  3. Analyse the relationship of the various elements within a scene and how these combine to convey mood and/or emotion
  4. Appreciate the need for attention to detail within a design concept
  5. Understand the relationship between exposure and light in scene setting
  6. Demonstrate technical control over camera, lighting, sound, props, movement etc., appropriate to the realisation of their designs
