Brief Description

This module is designed to broaden students' knowledge and experience of lesser known film form and content. It will encourage them to reflect on contemporary film-making by looking at how mainstream has always drawn from the 'edges' Having developed their technical skills in the first semester, this provides them with the opportunity to experiment and push their aesthetic understanding of the form.??

Indicative Syllabus

The topics touched upon will include World Cinema, Genres and Movements some of the key Film Theorist approaches all accompanied by weekly screenings. Students will explore a non-Hollywood approach to filmmaking including a series of Experimental Films and discuss them in terms of their socio-political context and auteur theory alongside visual, audio and editing techniques.

Through a series of group film projects, each focusing on different aspects of production, students will experiment with and expand upon techniques they have learnt in MD4702.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they:

  1. understand key technical/symbolic codes of film meaning
  2. understand key terms and confidently use them
  3. appreciate the main differences in style and approach between Hollywood and European cinema
  4. can apply theoretical ideas to practical filmmaking
  5. can develop research and analytical skills.
  6. are able to experiment with ideas that diversify from traditional narrative  filmmaking.
