Brief Description

The module aims to develop the students understanding of the complex pre-production process. Whatever the nature of the production, all films operate under established policy guidelines and basic operating procedures in both aspects of paperwork and shoot preparation.

Indicative Syllabus

To get a film off the ground and into production is a long drawn out and complicated process.Through a range of lectures, workshops and practical excersises, elements covered include: Structure of the Film Crew and a detailed role dissection on both professional and student sets, Storyboarding, Location Recc-ing, the logisitics of a space for shooting and risk assessment forms, Casting – how to find actors then auditioning them, Scheduling and Budgeting, how to break it down by using the Industry standard Movie Magic Software.

This module explores all of the aspects then puts them into practice on projects the students are producing in the parallel running modules MD4901 and MD4702 initially through a range of simple projects then by putting together the pre production package for a couple of short films.

Students will be divided into a variety of small groups and by working as part of a crew they will gain an insight into the roles and responsibilities of all those involved. Students are assessed though the submission of group folders and participation within several group Crits.

This module ensures a professional approach to the business of filmmaking to prepare students for their own productions whilst at the University and what it is expected of them when they work within the Film and Television Industry.
