Brief Description

This module explores the modes and methods by which film is distributed with both traditional outlets and digitally based systems considered.

Students examine the business, economic and social factors driving distribution models at the regional, national and international level.

Indicative Syllabus

Considering a key aspect of the film value chain, this module will examine the processes involved in the distribution of film content. The role of financial models, marketing, release windows, ticket modelling, sales data and campaign planning will be considered. Distributor's relationships with producers and exhibitors will also be explored. Case studies of the distribution of film via cinema spaces, online outlets, video on demand and pay per view will be cited to illustrate these current distribution models.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

1. Understand the role of distribution in the film value chain

2. Critically appreciate the principles of distribution strategies and the relationship that these have with Digital Film Production and marketing

3. Appreciate the various film distribution models

4. Evaluate these models to assess their effectiveness

5. Show evidence of independent research and illustrate understanding of the material

6. Demonstrate clarity and fluency of expression and a logical and coherent structure in their writing.

7. Apply proper referencing conventions
