Brief Description | This module uses theory and practice to introduce students to fundamental principles of songwriting. It will also introduce students a range of analysis techniques for understanding songs as texts that create and provoke meaning through sounds, words and performance. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module will introduce a range of approaches to enable students to analyse existing written songs and their own original compositions. Its aim is to empower students to both recognise and incorporate a range of styles into their own compositional practice and performance. This module will also explore the various ways that academics have approached popular music songs as texts. It will examine the application of basic musicology to popular songs (e.g. the work of Richard Middleton) and will also examine Wall's concepts of the Dominant Song Form (the Tin Pan Alley tradition), the European Vernacular Tradition and the European 'Art' Tradition. |
