Brief Description

This module will give students a broad base of technical knowledge of production skills, midi and audio recording, sequencing and editing, specifically using Logic Pro and Pro Tools.

Indicative Syllabus

The module introduces and explores the computer based music studio, with particular emphasis on multi-track midi sequencing and non-linear audio recording. This will involve Logic Pro in digital workstation environment and Pro Tools for capturing live performance in a recording studio. A variety of exercises and working examples will be used to highlight the wide-ranging role of the computer as a composing, recording and editing tool, both technically and aesthetically, and will include a basic instruction on the use of software instrumentation specifically Logic Pro in a workstation environment.. The module will allow students to produce songs or compositions that explore their own creative direction, but will also require them to produce music for a brief.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1.     Demonstrate a secure knowledge of how to record in various situations as well as the basic nature of acoustics and microphone placements

2.   Demonstrate a secure knowledge of how audio and midi are used in combination within the computer workstation environment

3.   Demonstrate how to use the Pro Tools HD environment to track performances in the studio

4.   Demonstrate technical control over a non-linear music/audio production suite

5.   Professionally attend and contribute to studio sessions where specific musical skills are required for group work

6.   Demonstrate an aesthetic approach to the application of music technology

7.   A self reflective approach to their own compositions and recordings
