Brief Description

This module offers an overview of the music industry, covering all key areas from composition and recording, to live performance and promotion.

 

The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the scope and nature of the contemporary music industry management & marketing processes, from the development of the creative product to its management, distribution and promotion. Students will have the opportunity to look at how key elements of music are applied and exploited across the music industry from independents to large conglomerates.

 

This module aims to allow the student to gain development tools and techniques in the construction of audio, promotional material and artists. Also this module will allow the student to obtain professional insight knowledge and information within the recording environment, from the equipment used to the production of the “final product”.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will cover the key areas of the music industry, from concept to sales and distribution including:

•    Composition and recording

•    Studio work and technology

•    Technological packages

•    Events and events management

•    Promotion and development

•    Pitching and marketing

Managing artists (A&R)

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to :

  1. Undertake and evaluate studio based processes involved in the contemporary music industry.
  2. Use and work with appropriate equipment and audio packages
  3. Critically evaluate a music product in terms of the potential success relative to the criteria of a particular music agency.
  4. Manage a music project from conception through to completion and potential
  5. Pitch and promote an artist/s supplying suitable materials and budget

002: 70% Coursework: Individual, portfolio: 2000 words or equivalent.
