Brief Description | This module offers a solid grounding in the practical aspects of journalism. Students will take part in a series of lectures, workshops, editorial meetings and seminars to build the core skills, which run through this degree and the journalism industry. |
Indicative Syllabus | Students will learn how to utilise the newsgathering and writing skills they are developing to produce audio and video packages as well as copy-subbing and design skills for online and print. Sessions will be held to highlight the relationship between the newsgathering, writing and production elements of journalism, industry conventions and standards and the importance of creativity within the industry. Students will be encouraged to develop their critical and evaluative skills in the production of their own and colleagues’ broadcast, print and online work. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. Produce audio and video packages and bulletins, which are balanced, well-illustrated and provide a clear and accurate account of a news event. 2. Produce print and online designs, which are effective and creative and make the best use of available words, pictures and other points of entry. 3. Differentiate between the particular demands of radio, video, online and print. 4. Demonstrate an appreciation of the range of styles of delivery appropriate for different news markets. 5. Identify sources for research and establish a strategy for research using standard research tools. Use electronic sources to present an accurately word processed text and for research.
