Brief Description

This module concentrates on key theories of subcultural theory and debates and critiques surrounding the notion of the 'subcultural'.

Indicative Syllabus

The module allows for students to explore particular issues regarding youth, music and subculture in depth. It concentrates on the subcultural theories coming out Dick Hebdige's work with The Birmingham School and subsequent contemporary debates and critiques of that work. Psychoanalytical methodologies for analysing fans and subcultures are also touched on.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the module students should be able to:
a) have a critical appreciation of classic subcultural theory.
b) have the ability to investigate contemporary subcultures in the light of classic theory.
c) be aware of the impact of psychoanalysis on fan cultures.
d) understand the nature of the changing theoretical climate concerning debates around youth and subcultures/scenes.



ii. Skills
On completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) identify and critique Dick Hebdige's theory of subcultures.
b) be aware of how media texts mediate the subcultural.
c) apply the skills of semiotic analysis to on-line/niche/micro media.
d) identify and reconcile competing theories of the subculture.
e) working creatively to achieve project aims.
