Brief Description

This module allows students to develop an understanding of the expectations associated with working in media, creative and culture industries. More broadly, the module emphasises creative and cultural skills so as to be better prepared for the needs of society. Awareness of rapid developments in these areas from global to local perspectives will be understood alongside preparation personally and professionally for any career in a competitive job market.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will deliver taught and creative sessions on preparing for employment, evaluating recent developments in the media, creative, culture and heritage industries, researching career opportunities, and on the development of interpersonal skills. An increased awareness of careers related to media, communication and culture at home and abroad will be secured through guest lectures. Small group workshops will develop skills of creative thinking, personal confidence and professionalism, which are transferable into any workplace. There will be workshops on CV writing, interview skills, networking and the development of creative and cultural skills. Students will be expected to reflect upon their degree, themselves and their future plans. In particular, the module will allow them to critically apply theoretical/conceptual concerns raised throughout the course to evaluate media, creative and culture industries.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Demonstrate a secure understanding of their own personal attributes and be self-reflective about the skills and abilities that they possess, or need to acquire, for future employment in any field
b) Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the developments of the media, creative and culture industries and the skills required to work in a variety of contexts c) Reflect critically upon media, creative and culture industries, drawing connections between organisations/institutions and the theoretical issues developed in the course.



ii. Skills
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Identify, research and develop a deeper understanding of the career opportunities available
b) Develop organisational, professional and interpersonal skills
c) Demonstrate an independent approach with an emphasis upon self-direction
d) Communicate and work effectively with others
