Brief Description

This module focuses on the knowledge and skills required for the production and presentation of music programmes for radio. It will consolidate and extend writing, researching and studio production skills acquired during levels I and II 

Indicative Syllabus

In a short series of introductory lectures and seminars students will be introduced to how radio defines itself and its audience by the music it plays; the relationship between radio and the music industry; and the role of the radio DJ as cultural taste-maker in music. In a series of practical exercises students will practice the techniques used to devise, produce and present music programming for a range of audiences. Students will be introduced to the role and technique of the ‘studio session’. The module will culminate in the production of a specialist music programme.

i Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) work as part of a team to a professional standard
b) have a high level of technical competence
c) Evidence a comprehensive understanding of how radio uses music to attract, build and retain audience.
d) Evaluate the role of the radio as cultural tastemaker in music



ii. Skills
Students should be able to:
a) Devise and produce original music programming for specific audiences
b) Work at an advanced level both individually and as part of a team in the studio environment In a manner that evidences a development from Level II work
c) Operate studio equipment and studio software to produce programme content to a high technical standard
d) Produce effective running orders, scripts and production documentation for music programmes
e) Plan and conduct effective interviews with participants in the music industry (e.g. musicians, songwriters, producers etc.)
f) Use appropriate presentation techniques.
