Module Code MCC318
Module Tutor Gerard Moorey
School Media
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites None
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description Amongst the core questions which will be addressed on this module are: • how do we make sense of the body BOTH as an object of representation (in film, print, medical imaging, art and in history) and as a subject of experience (through sense, thought, movement, pain, sex, disease and death)? • what do we mean by claiming that the body is subject to "disciplinary regimes"? • what are the differences between thinking of the body as determined by gender as opposed to biological sex? These questions will require that students become familiar with their theoretical contexts, and with the concepts that can be used to articulate them.
Indicative Syllabus The module will include: 1. evaluating ways of understanding historical changes in the way we inhabit and in the way we represent the body (from modernity through to cyberculture). 2. debating the politics of representing the body in contemporary culture (race, class, sex, children, disability, gender). 3. mapping out key theories and debates influencing the study of the body by way of using and developing concepts taken from a variety of sources.
