Brief Description | This course charts major developments in documentary film from early silent film to contemporary television output. Questions of authenticity, ethics and representation are explored via a challenging programme of screenings and readings. |
Indicative Syllabus | There is a particular focus on the British Documentary Movement of the 30s, on the Direct Cinema of the 60s and on contemporary documentary treatments from video diaries, to docu-soap, to postmodern, self-reflexive film. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate that they: a) have gained a detailed knowledge of the history and principles of a documentary film b) understand the key theoretical debates surrounding documentary film c) can produce closely argued textual analysis ii. Skills Students will refine their analytical skills and ability to prosecute a discursive argument |
