Brief Description This course charts the media's relationship to the past in terms of film and television output. Key concepts of personal, collective, artificial and new memory will be used to explore questions of authenticity, identity and the politics of media archiving and media events.

Learning Outcomes i) i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Understand and analyse the various ways in which the media shapes and re-shapes histories, our own as well as national and international.
b) Understand and apply concepts of 'personal memory', 'collective memory', artificial memory', 'new memory'.
c) Understand and analyse how the past is assembled and represented by journalists, programme and filmmakers.
d) Effectively analyse media events, spectacles, representations and images of the past in terms of discourse, hegemony, narrative, signification, audience effects and technology to unpack the layers of vision, text, culture and the individual.


ii. Skills
By the end of the module students should be able to:
a) Students will have the opportunity to further develop their analytical and research skills.
b) Students working independently will gain considerable experience of selecting, synthesising and illustrating critical material.
c) Communication skills will be further developed, including communicating research information to others through group discussion
d) Students will demonstrate a development in writing skills by communicating both discursively and in report format
