Brief Description | This module aims to develop those skills and techniques required for the successful study of law at undergraduate level, including transferable skills of finding information, and written and oral communication. It also explores key aspects of the English Legal System and of careers in law. |
Indicative Syllabus | Sources of law, the court system in England and Wales, the legal profession and judiciary, careers in law and how to qualify, and non-legal careers. Personal Development Planning. Use of legal databases, reading law reports and statutes, and citing sources. Writing for legal study, referencing presentation skills, debating and an introduction to mooting. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to: 1. demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of the English Legal System including principles, sources and courts and tribunals; 2. demonstrate broad understanding of judicial precedent; how to conduct legal research; how to read case judgments and statutes; and correctly cite and reference source materials using the Oxford Standard Citation of Legal Authorities. 3. demonstrate the techniques required for answering legal problem questions and legal essay questions 4. demonstrate basic competence in mooting 5. demonstrate understanding of the legal profession and judiciary, including roles, ethical issues, and routes to qualification; and an understanding of alternative career opportunities for law graduates; 6. reflect on skills developed and knowledge acquired, identify further development needs and draft an effective CV. |
