Brief Description

This module will examine the general principles of the law relating to partnership, sale of goods, agency and consumer credit.

Indicative Syllabus

Nature of a partnership, types of partnership and the general legal principles relating to the creation and existence of a partnership;
Saleof goods under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982;
General principles of the law of agency including the creation of agency agreements and examination of the duties and rights arising under such agreements;
Introduction to consumer credit under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of those aspects of the law of  partnership, sale of goods, agency and consumer credit identified in the content summary above.
b) Demonstrate knowledge of policy issues and an understanding of their impact on the law.
c) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of areas of difficulty or uncertainty in the law and areas of proposed law reform.

By the end of the module students should have developed skills in:

a) Application and problem solving
Able to apply the legal principles studied to a range of complex problems within the law relating to partnership, sale of goods, agency and consumer credit and present well-supported conclusions

b) Sources and research
Able to identify sources for research and establish a strategy for research using standard research tools.

c) Analysis, evaluation, critical judgment and synthesis
Able to analyse complex problems in the law relating to partnership, sale of goods, agency and consumer credit and to identify the legal principles to be applied.

d) Autonomy and ability to learn
Able to carry out reading and study with limited staff guidance.
Able to plan and manage their workload.

e) Communication and literacy
Able to communicate more complex legal issues clearly, both orally and in writing, using legal terminology correctly.

f) Other key skills
IT — able to use electronic sources for research and to present an accurately word processed text
Team working — able to work in a group as a participant who contributes effectively to the group’s task
Numeracy — able to calculate damages and proportionate interests in partnership assets, profits and losses
