Brief Description | This moduel builds on knowledge and skills developed in LW187 in enabling students to research, obtain and undertake a vacation placement or a mini-pupillage in chambers. The placement, which must be for a minimum of two weeks, may be taken in one or two organisations and may include both an Easter and Summer placement. |
Indicative Syllabus | Students will undertake a minimum two week vacation placement in a law firm, law centre, company legal department, court or legal agency (Crown Prosecution Service, Government Legal Service, Public Defender Service) or a mini-pupillage in chambers. Topics covered will build on those introduced in LW187 and include: personal skills audits, identifying appropriate placement opportunities, CVs, letters of application and online applications, self-promotion, interview skills, professional ethics, preparing portfolios. |
Learning Outcomes | i. Knowledge and Understanding . By the end of the module, students should: • Have a sound knowledge and understanding of their personal attributes, skills and abilities as they relate to progression to employment in the legal profession or related employment. • Have an understanding of employment opportunities in the legal profession including City, Commercial and High Street firms, City and Provincial chambers and legal agencies and the skills required to work in a variety of contexts. • Have a sound knowledge and understanding of professional ethics as they relate to placement in the legal profession or related employment. ii. Skills . By the end of the module students should have developed skills in: • Sources and research Able to identify, locate and research placement opportunities. Able to carry out research tasks in the placement. • Analysis, evaluation, critical judgement and synthesis Able to analyse own strengths and development needs in relation to employment opportunities. • Communication and literacy Able to produce a CV and letter of application in hard copy or on-line Able to communicate effectively with others in the work environment both orally and in writing. • Autonomy and ability to learn Able to manage tasks allocated in the placement to agreed deadlines. Able to reflect on theirown learning and identify development needs. • Other key skiils Able to work effectively as part of a team.
