Brief Description This module examines and evaluates issues affecting consumer behaviour and the leisure and sport industry and the implications these may have for the skills and the philosophy of the leisure manager.
Indicative Syllabus Summary The module takes a critical perspective on developments in leisure and the leisure and sport industry. There is analysis of lifestyles and the work/leisure relationship with reappraisal of the meaning of leisure and of the work/life balance. Developments in the leisure and sport industry, and the commercialisation and commodification of its products and services are examined from the perspective of both consumer and provider, and the merits of consumerist and participatory approaches illustrate the dichotomous nature of leisure participation. The experiential and dialectical properties of leisure consumption and their implications for provision are also evaluated. Other issues such as gender and ethnicity and the social and ethical context of various activities and pursuits are critically examined. The module draws its review of issues and trends together by postulating future scenarios of leisure consumption and provision.
