Brief Description This module examines the challenges of, and approaches to, the operation of indoor and outdoor sports facility operations, from facility design to programming and technical operations. It will enable students to understand how the sports facility manager meets the expectations of customers, sports bodies and other stakeholders through sound planning, design and technical operations
Indicative Syllabus The module considers how the planning, design and operation of sports facilities contribute to meeting the high standards of service, safety and technical operation required. The various requirements of sports’ governing bodies, legislation, safety standards, codes of practice and different user groups are examined, and their implications for the facility manager assessed. Technology and its application to such provisions as swimming pools, ice rinks, indoor dry sports and outdoor pitches are examined, including their contribution to sustainable management practices. Criteria for selecting materials and technology for sports facilities are assessed, along with the necessary practices for safe and effective operation
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of this module students should be able to:
a) Understand the importance of integrated planning, design and operations for effective and sustainable management of sports facilities
b) Assess the implications of legislation, standards, codes of practice and customer expectations for the design and operation of sports facilities
c) Assess the appropriateness of a range of available materials and technologies for application in sports facility settings



ii. Skills 
Students will be given the opportunity to develop their key skills in the following areas during the course of this module:
a) Communication and literacy
b) Problem solving
c) Information and communication technology
