Brief Description This module examines the operational challenges and management of leisure and visitor attractions, from design to service delivery and operations. It will enable students to understand how the venue and attractions manager meets the expectations of operators, users and other stakeholders through sound planning, design and operations.
Indicative Syllabus The module considers how the planning and design of leisure attractions contribute to meeting the high standards of service delivery, safety, innovation and technical operation required. Operational challenges relating to a variety of types of attraction will be examined such as legal requirements and quality standards, different approaches to interpretation, visitor management, and the management of seasonal and volunteer staff. The importance and application of technology to attractions in their various forms are examined, including their contribution to sustainable management practices.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) Understand the importance of planning and design of leisure and visitor attractions in their effective and sustainable management
b) Identify, and evaluate a range of operational challenges facing leisure or visitor attractions
c) Propose appropriate solutions to operational challenges in the context of leisure or visitor attractions
d) Assess the appropriateness of a range of available technologies for application to leisure or visitor attraction operations

ii. Skills 
Students will be given the opportunity to develop their key skills in the following areas during the course of this module:
a) Communication and literacy
b) Problem solving
c) Information and communication technology

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 18% including lectures, group tasks and tutorials
Student private study: 82% including independent learning tasks as detailed in the module guide, preparation for lectures, undertaking and completing assignments.

002: 60% Coursework: Standard (2000 words or equivalent)
