Brief Description

The aim of this module is to appraise a range of perspectives on children's play and critically examine their application within contemporary policy for, and practice with, children and young people.

Indicative Syllabus

The module provides an opportunity for students to appraise perspectives on play in relation to their own disciplinary or practice background.Children's opportunity to play and to access supportive environments for play is the object of considerable concern within media and policy discourse. This module will enable students to enhance their understanding of the importance of play and to consider the implications from this for their own particular field of study and/or practice.The module will pay particular attention to recent research that considers play as a disposition, and as everyday actions and behaviours which operate across a range of adaptive systems to build and enhance resilience. The module will consider the intrinsic nature, unique qualities and value of children's play including: key characteristics of play; the range of children's play behaviours; an introduction to theoretical perspectives of play; the relationship between play and creativity, well-being, and resilience, and the application of understanding to specific areas of study

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse diverse perspectives on play
  2. Appraise characteristics and criteria of play behaviour
  3. Synthesise and apply play theory to their own area of study or practice
  4. Understand relevant conceptual paradigms, frameworks and theories
