Brief Description

This module draws on diverse disciplines (including cognitive, affective and social neuroscience, evolutionary development psychology, ecologicalpsychology and play theory) to explore the reciprocal relationship between play and brain development, and the possible implications for professional practice in supporting children’s play.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will introduce the following topics: a general introduction to physiology and anatomy of the brain, perspectives on brain evolution and development; an introduction to resilience; the relationship between play, resilience and brain development to include emotion-regulation, stress response systems, pleasure and enjoyment, attachment, creativity and learning; ADHD and autism, the potential implications for professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Evaluate information from a variety of sources to inform their professional work.
  2. Synthesise information from neuroscience with theories of play
  3. Critically analyse the role of emotions in children’s play
  4. Reflect how new learning impacts on their professional practice
  5. Present complex information in an appropriate format for a diverse audience
