Brief Description

The module aims to identify the key features of the contemporary adventure and sports tourism sector, its product base and management.  Analysis of the tourism sector is conducted at local, regional and international levels.

Indicative Syllabus

This module requires students to review the role of people and places in the adventure and sports tourism context. The module content will cover the areas of: balancing the needs of physical environments and people; principles of ecology and environmental management; managing for people and community led sport and adventure tourism; the use of artificial adventure and sport tourism environments and land use conflict management.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the relationship between the ecological and socio-cultural environments of adventure and sports tourism;
  2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the imperative for sustainable provision of adventure and sports tourism;
  3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of managing the natural and artificial adventure and sports tourism environment;
  4. Critically understand the importance of managing environmental resources as a key aspect of managing the adventure and sports tourism experience; and
  5. Demonstrate a range of key skills that are required to evaluate the contemporary tourism sector including Communication and literacy; Problem Solving; and Independent working and learning.
