Brief Description

This module provides an in-depth, critical analysis of ethical approaches to tourism management. It addresses contemporary trends in the tourism industry towards ethical, sustainable and responsible tourism, consolidating policy and implementation issues within the wider context of ethical theory and application.

Indicative Syllabus

Topics include: The significance of ethics in tourism management, philosophical terminology and concepts, applications of ethics, the role of politics and economics in ethical decision-making, tourism and human rights, environmental ethics, tools and management systems for the implementation of ethical values in the tourism industry, opportunities and challenges to implementation of ethical principles in the tourism sector.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and apply relevant ethical theories and principles to tourism management practice;
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the nature of the political and historical environment of tourism in the development context;
  3. Critically evaluate the development, application and implementation of ethical guidelines and management systems in the tourism industry;
  4. Critically evaluate and apply the principles of sustainable tourism in the context of ethical concepts;
  5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of moral reasoning and the process and consequences of ethical decision-making in tourism management; and
  6. Demonstrate industry applicable skills in Communication and Literacy, Problem Solving, and Independent Learning and Working
