Brief Description

This module introduces the student to the theoretical constructs of a model of therapeutic playwork developed by Gordon Sturrock and Perry Else. It examines the background to the approach, the vocabulary and technical language, the methods of observation and a basic understanding of the application. This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

Introduces the nature of dysplay as it is being evidenced in young people and the concept of therapeutic working in the playspace and the idea of the play cycle, cues, frames, returns, flow and annihilation. Defines the technical language, for example: containment, adulteration, modes of intervention, affective topography and, in particular, unplayed out material. Finally, it provides opportunities for observational practice.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. appreciate the range of issues and problems that they may encounter in the playspace.
  2. demonstrate a sound familiarity with the underpinning theoretical constructs of therapeutic playwork (Sturrock and Else).
  3. demonstrate knowledge of the play process, play cycle and appropriate intervention modes.
  4. apply and evaluate observational techniques to the play of the child or children in the playspace.
  5. analyse and interpret such observations using the theoretical constructs of the play cycle.
  6. recognise and identify 'unplayed out material' and its emergence in the playspace.
