Brief Description

In this module students will work on a classical text, applying skills in text analysis, research and period study to place the play in its social contextand work on period language and movement. This module follows a professional process from text study to performance with a professional team of theatre practitioners.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will study a classical text with a director. They will study the language, movement, and etiquette of the period and understand the increased technical requirements of classical performance rehearsing and creating character within the confines of period and style. Students will research the period, become involved with the professional team in concept discussion and set and costume design to develop their understanding of realising concepts in a specific theatre genre. Studentswill experience working from rehearsal to performance with a professional team in a theatre space.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Engage intelligently with the key components of classical performance and the processes by which it is created and realised.
  2. Engage creatively and critically with the creation and production of a classical theatre performance through a developed understanding of appropriate performance vocabularies, techniques, structures and working methods.
  3.  Engage creatively and critically in appropriate independent research, investigating past performances as part of the process of creating new performance.
  4. Understand the theory and practice of the audience – performer relationship.
