Brief Description

In this module students will study the theory, methodology and the practical application of physical theatre, developing their work to performance level

Indicative Syllabus

Students will study contemporary physical theatre companies and practitioners, developing a wide range of physical theatre skills and practice. Using the work of major practitioners in this field, students will develop and understand the importance of the connection between voice, body and emotion and the expressive power this creates for the performer in physical theatre performance. The students will work with an extant or improvised script or catalyst towards a performed presentation of the work.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1.  Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key physical theatre practitioners and practices, both contemporary and historical.
  2. Engage intelligently with the key components of physical theatre performance and the processes by which it is created and realised.
  3. Understand the complexity of group dynamics and use this understanding to aid in the management and leadership of groups.
  4. Engage critically in appropriate independent research, whether investigating past or present performances or as part of the process of creating new performance.
  5. Understand the theory and practice of the audience – performer relationship.
