Brief Description

This module highlights the development of international destinations in the context of globalisation and the interrelationship between local and global decision-making processes. It aims to develop an understanding of the diversity of destination management models, including issues of contemporary hotel and resort management and development, and the challenges faced by destination managers of responding to a constantly shifting global politico- economic environment.

Indicative Syllabus

Topics will include: Impacts of globalisation; power issues of transnational and small tourism businesses; analysis of the relationships between stakeholders at local, national and international levels; the challenges of managing sustainability; disaster and crisis management;

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the implications of globalisation on destinations;
  2. Analyse and apply relevant destination development models in a variety of tourism and hospitality settings;
  3. Assess and evaluate the dynamics and importance of stakeholder relationships at local, national, and international levels;
  4. Analyse critical issues associated with the operation of tourism and hospitality businesses within a macro- and micro environment;
  5. Apply the principles of sustainability to destination management; and
  6.  Demonstrate their key skills in the following areas:  Communication and Literacy, Problem Solving, Independent Learning and Working and Working with Others
