Brief Description

The module will explore how meanings and forms of niche tourism products are created and transformed in post-industrial societies. It also addresses how issues derived from the production and consumption niche tourism products are addressed by tourism managers.

Indicative Syllabus

The module seeks to investigate the creation and development of niche tourism from a socio-cultural perspective. New forms of tourism will be identified and analysed in terms of consumer behaviour and management options within a wide socio-cultural and political context.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of emerging tourism forms
  2. Utilise relevant theoretical perspectives in analysing demand for new tourist experiences;
  3. Identify and analyse the impacts of niche tourism on contemporary society;
  4. Understand and communicate the reasons why niche tourism products emerge and are potentially transformed; and
  5. Demonstrate a range of key skills that are required to evaluate contemporary trends in niche tourism: communication and literacy; problem solving; and independent working and learning.
